Course Description:
The course provides an overview of the emergence and development of sociolinguistics. It also provides a brief account
of language variation across communication (i.e. the role of situational variables in linguistic expression and discourse
structure). Moreover, it trains the students on how to collect and analyse sociolinguistic data
Course Objectives:
- Help students understand the social dimension of language;
- Discuss the implications of theoretical linguistics and applied areas, including language education and linguistic
policy;
- Familiarize students with basic principles of sociolinguistic methodology;
- Expose students to original research on sociolinguistic topics; and
- Help students learn how to collect and analyse sociolinguistic data.
